sick and injured

Terrace Flower

After writing about learning how to bike ride, I must confess that I fell.  Hard.  I crashed into the curb on a freezing morning, and fell over my bike, causing the pedal to scrap off a nice chunk of skin. I got a huge bruise on my left calf.  I also have bruises on my right calf and shin.  But I got back on the bike and pedaled home where I cleaned and bandaged myself.  It has been a week of recovery.

However, I got a cold this past weekend.  Well, it seems more like the flu.  I had to body aches and chills.  I am sure I had fever.  I am now coughing and hacking my lungs.  It seems like a longer and harder recovery with my asthma.  I went to the Doc yesterday and got a new fast acting inhaler.  I am impressed by how much they've changed.  It has a dosage remaining counter.  It lasts for a year.

I started this fitness lifestyle with the intention of getting off my asthma medication.  Colds and flues make me realize how desperately I need medication to breath.

I haven't worked out since last week Wednesday.  I am feeling so sluggish and outta sorts.  I would love to go bike riding; especially spinning.  But the energy is not there.

This fitness break has given me a chance to really think about my workouts.  I want to get back to running . . . consistently.  I want to train for more 5Ks.  I have one in June.  My goal is to get back to running on the treadmill and venture to running outdoors at least once a week.  I plan to run 4 days out of the week.  Do yoga.  And pushups.  Running is what sparked my interest in exercise and weightloss.  I really need to get back to basics.  And running does that for me.

How long of a fitness break do you take when you are sick?  What do you do to get back on track with fitness after an illness or injury?

  1. The longest break for me has been almost 2 weeks I believe. And, like you, I return to the basics. The treadmill or the Elyptical, and let me tell you, it was hard to get back into the swing of things, so I did intervals for 15 minutes. When I hit the weight room (which I love), it felt like I never left. I personally need to focus more on loving cardio. Makes no sense to do all this strength training if Im not actively MELTING away the fat.

Im hoping you feel better my dear! Dont' be so hard on yourself. What will be, is what will be. Have fun with it!

  3. You poor thing! My back is bothering me lately, so I'm thinking about Yoga or maybe something mellow like water aerobics. Just go easy and take care...

  4. Thank you Lynda. I h ope you do get to doing Yoga or water aerobics. I love Yoga. I will get back to that first because it eases me into the other fitness programs I do.

  6. Oh no! I'm sorry about both the spill and the bug. :( I was sick this past weekend and didn't start feeling human again until Thursday/Friday - I hate *wanting* to be active, but just not having the energy to get up and go. Hope you're feeling 100% ASAP.

  7. Oh my goodness, yikes how scary, and then how difficult to bounce back when you've got something else going on now. My obstacle recently (for a long spell) was more mental than physical. Just a LOT of stress going on family-wise and it really took a toll on me. It was difficult to get back after that, but I did get there eventually. Keep on going, girl. You can do it. :)

  9. You should have seen me last year, when I shopped eBay & bought my very own 1st road bike (the kind that clips your shoes onto the pedals)...
The 1st time I tried to ride it up our hill, I went slower & slower until I fell over on my side bcz I couldn't get my shoe unclipped in time! I'm sure it would have made a hilarious video if someone had been filming...
